AT THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN

TOUCHED

BY HISTORY

There are many attractions and historical monuments in the neighborhood of the Mercure Hotel Debrecen. With an easy walk of a few minutes, guests can reach the classicist-style Great Debrecen Protestant Church, which is the symbol of the city and the Hungarian Protestantism - that's why Debrecen is called the Calvinist Rome. The 1,500 square meter sanctuary, built between 1805 and 1824, witnessed great times:

the government of the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-49 fled to Debrecen and announced the dethronement of the House of Habsburg on 14th of April, 1849, and announced the Declaration of Independence. The panoramic promenade can be visited with a guided tour: you can admire the sunset from a height of 30 meters between the two towers during the summer.

DÉRI MUSEUM

The Déri Museum, surrounded by a beautiful park, is also within reach of the hotel: the Munkácsy trilogy is among the permanent exhibitions of the more than 90-year-old neo-baroque building. Mihály Munkácsy is one of the most outstanding Hungarian painters – his world-famous trilogy, Christ before Pilate, Golgotha and Ecce homo are the greatest value of the museum. Standing in front of the works of impressive size – more than 4 by 6 meters – you can feel how small a person is and how great the power of art is.

NÁDOR DÓSA SQUARE

The renovated Nádor Dósa square and the statue of the founder of the state, King St. Stephen, were handed over in 2020. At the inauguration of the statue, the mayor of Debrecen, László Papp, stated that the task of protecting Christianity has been one of the most important missions and tasks of Hungarians since Saint Stephen. Decorated with water fantasies and light painting in the summer, the square is also a symbol of national unity and the unity of the state, as it was completed for the 100th anniversary of the Trianon peace decree that tore Hungary apart.

LOCAL COLOR AND TASTE CAVALCADE

If you wake up early, visit the Debrecen market via the recently modernized flower market – through the pedestrian zone on Csapó Street. The vendors often come from the countryside, mostly with their own produce, freshly picked that morning. Taste the quality smoked products, jams, syrups, choose Hungarian honey as a gift!

WHERE TIME STANDS STILL

Roncsbár is Debrecen’s only ruin pub. Nostalgia, concerts, game nights, movie screenings, getting to know each other – all ages can have a great time in this eclectic environment, where time stands still a bit between the sets. It’s just you, the music and a glass of joie de vivre.
